The Best Laser for Dark Spots (Melasma Patches) Dr. Marino, Dermatologist In this video, I review laser toning, which I consider one of the best lasers for reducing melasma sun spots, commonly called patchy patches. Melasma is a condition that consists of patches that appear mostly on sun-exposed areas of the face, primarily the cheeks, jaw, forehead, chin, and the area above the lips known as the "mustache area." It is characterized by light or dark brown (sometimes grayish) patches with well-defined borders. Treatment consists of sunscreen, retinol, and depigmenting agents such as kojic acid, arbutin, uva-ursi, or even hydroquinone. These medications should always be used under medical supervision. Oral medications such as tranexamic acid or sunscreen capsules can also be used. Regarding lasers for dark spots reduction, the Q-switch NdyaG laser, in its toning variant, gives excellent results, as demonstrated in various studies, such as one conducted on more than 30,000 Asian women, where more than 90% had positive results. Another study conducted on Latin American women (Venezuela) demonstrated improved dark spots reduction in more than 70% of cases. In general, laser toning is a very safe laser, as it can be used on brown or dark skin, without risk of complications. Likewise, laser toning has no recovery time; meaning if you have it done today, you could go back to work tomorrow without any problems. You don't have to be at home recovering for several weeks, unlike other lasers (such as fractional laser).
