Birds of New Caledonia by Hannah & Erik

New Caledonia is one of the oldest parts of our world and a destination on many birders’ list. It is home to over 25 endemic bird species. The most famous bird of New Caledonia is the Kagu, a flightless bird that is the only species in its genus. The allure of the Kagu and the other endemic species spurred Hannah and Erik to visit this incredible birding spot in 2025. Hannah and Erik are avid birders who love to share birding with others through their podcasts (Hannah and Erik Go Birding, Women Birders (Happy Hour), and Bird Nerd Book Club), guided trips abroad and at birding festivals, and through social media. They believe that birding is about the places you go, the people you meet, and the birds you see. When not traveling, they live in Cannon Beach, Oregon (the best place to see Tufted Puffins in the lower 48 states). There Hannah is a third-generation hotelier, and Erik is a city councilor and firefighter/EMT. Hannah and Erik can be reached at [email protected]. 12 people online Kagu. Photo: Hannah & Erick
