(Not quite) NC500 pt 3: Scammed at John O'Groats! | Dunbeath | Dunnet Head | Dunnet Bay | motorhome
Today we leave Brora, where we stayed at the CAMC campsite, and head north along the A9, as part of the well known North Coast 500 (NC500) route. Thanks to @highlands2hammocks Destination NC500 book, our first stop is Dunbeath Harbour, and we'd highly recommend it. There was plenty of parking on the day we were there, with cracking views across the bay and towards a castle, as well as good, clean public toilets. Moving on, we went to John O'Groats, noting the decent price of fuel in Wick - 149.9p for diesel, compared to 161.9p at home! Confusion reigned at John O'Groats, as the car park signs demanded payment - whereas the website we'd checked en route said - in fact boasted - it was free. We're not necessarily complaining about the charge itself, just the mismatch with what we'd been led to believe from a supposedly current website. I did fill in their online contact form to try to clarify, but haven't received a reply. Despite that, John O'Groats was better than we'd expected. Sure, there are some touristy bits, but actually it still felt quite wild and unspoilt to me, and we were blessed with clear views to the Orkneys. After the obligatory posing with the famous signpost, we headed to Dunnet Head, mainland Britain's most northerly point. Or at least, we tried to. The road was closed for cabling works! We headed to our campsite - Dunnet Bay CAMC (a review is coming soon) - where we enjoyed a stunning sunset. We did Dunnet Head again the next morning, but the road was closed again. Guess we'll have to come back - not a hardship!! Destination NC500: https://highlands2hammocks.co.uk/prod...
