Gone Too Soon | Engelbert Dollfuß edit 🇦🇹

Chancellor Engelbert Dollfuß was assassinated by Austrian N@zis on July 25th, 1934. He was the leader of the Austrian Fatherland front, a Catholic, Nationalist and Corporatist political force in the post war Austria. Seeing firsthand the destructive course the Austrian Republic was setting itself, amidst constant communist, liberal and National Socialist agitation, Dollfuß united the conservative Austrian forces with agrarian political parties and the staunchly anti-communist Heimwehr under the collective banner of the fatherland front. This movement sought to incorporate all ‘true Austrians’. The movement was deeply conservative/traditionalist in its social sense, but forward thinking in the economic sense. Recognising the exploitative nature of capitalism and the socially eroding nature of communism, Dollfuß repositioned the state to adopt a corporatist economic system. In conclusion, his legacy remains that of some of the few, deeply catholic and most ideologically pure resistance to N@zi domination.
