Visitamos a NICOLASA y su paraíso en la montaña (abril 2026)

We returned to the mountains in the Capayán department (Catamarca) to visit Nicolasa Bazán, the woman who lives alone high in the mountains, in a house that withstands the weather, the distance, and the passage of time. On this visit in April 2026, we spent some time with her, brought her supplies, and talked about what she needed that day, also thinking about those who might want to visit her soon. Along the way, we show you the challenging ascent and the incredible natural environment where the Chaco Serrano meets the humidity of the Yungas, an ecotone teeming with biodiversity. We treated ourselves to a break in the "first clearing," with a unique sunrise and the mountain scent of Corpus Christi, as the first light ignited the greens of the landscape. We also encountered surprising scenes: golden silk orb-weavers with their webs shimmering in the sun, the marked dimorphism between females and males, and even a tarantula along the way; species that play a key role in the balance of the ecosystem. Back at her house, we noticed Nicolasa moving more slowly than before: her vision is severely impaired, and her mobility difficulties are becoming increasingly apparent. Even so, she continues to choose this place she loves and manages to live in her home at her own pace. Each time we leave, we come down with full hearts and, at the same time, with that inevitable mix of joy and sadness. Because her story reminds us how hard life in the countryside can be when silence and the mountains are your only companions… but it also leaves us with a profound certainty: no matter how far away you are, friendship always finds a way to reach you.
