The Dadu River Basin is one of the three largest river basins in Sichuan Province in terms of hydropower resources, with a planned hydropower development capacity exceeding 27 million kilowatts, making it the fifth largest hydropower base in my country. Today (the 30th), with the successful grid connection of the last generating unit of the Shaping First-Level Hydropower Station on the Dadu River, the Dadu River hydropower base has added over 2 million kilowatts of clean energy capacity, becoming one of the first river basins in China to achieve centralized and large-scale hydropower operation during the 15th Five-Year Plan period. To date, Sichuan Province's total installed capacity of clean energy has exceeded 130 million kilowatts, with hydropower accounting for nearly 80%. Recently, at the Yalong River Basin's integrated hydro-wind-solar base in Sichuan, the Lianghekou Hybrid Pumped Storage Power Station, the world's largest hybrid pumped storage project, has entered a critical phase of comprehensive construction. Lianghekou Pumped Storage Power Station Enters Critical Phase of Comprehensive Construction Diversion Channel Construction in Full Swing to Ensure Safe Flood Season for the Yalong River The Yagen First-Level Hydropower Station, located in Yajiang County, is an important component of the Lianghekou Hybrid Pumped Storage Power Station. Aerial footage shows that the cofferdam on the main channel of the Yalong River completely separates the river water from the construction work area, with formwork hoisting and rebar binding operations underway inside the cofferdam. Currently, the Yalong River water flows downstream through a diversion tunnel inside the mountain. However, with the flood season approaching, the diversion tunnel's flow capacity is insufficient to meet flood control demands. Therefore, the power station is constructing a diversion channel, currently in its final pouring stage, and is expected to be operational in ten days. At that time, the cofferdam will be dismantled, and the Yalong River water will flow smoothly downstream through the diversion channel. The arrival of the flood season also poses a severe challenge to the mountains on both banks. On the cliffs on both sides of the river, construction workers are working like "spider-men," simultaneously laying protective netting and reinforcing the slope rock. Dynamic Water Regulation and Hybrid Pumped Storage to Address Energy Storage Shortcomings The Yalong River basin is currently constructing the world's largest integrated hydro-wind-solar clean energy base, with a planned total installed capacity of 78 million kilowatts. The Lianghekou Hydropower Station, the Kela Photovoltaic Power Station, and the Suorong Photovoltaic Power Station together form the world's largest "hydro-solar complementary" project. "Hydro-solar complementary" refers to using the Lianghekou Hydropower Station to regulate the instability of photovoltaic power generation, but this method cannot store excess electricity. The construction of the Yagen First-Level Hydropower Station, however, impounds the water released from the Lianghekou Hydropower Station, forming a reservoir with a capacity of approximately 41 million cubic meters, acting as a giant energy conversion station and energy storage device. During the day, when photovoltaic power generation is abundant, reversible units pump water from the downstream reservoir of Lianghekou back to the upstream reservoir for storage, converting excess electricity into hydropower. At night, during peak electricity demand and when photovoltaic power generation is insufficient, water is released downstream, generating electricity both at the Lianghekou Hydropower Station and at the downstream Yagen First-Level Hydropower Station. After completion, the project will be able to transform approximately 7 million kilowatts of fluctuating wind and solar power generation into a stable, high-quality power source. This allows clean energy to complement each other, ensuring that green electricity can be received and transmitted effectively. A Two-Way Collaboration of Clean Energy and Artificial Intelligence On the Yalong River, a group of "special employees" are changing traditional work methods, making engineering construction safer and more efficient, and extending their influence to the operation and maintenance management of the entire integrated hydropower, wind power, and solar power base. Inside the tunnel hundreds of meters underground, previously 15 workers were needed to work close to the high-risk work area. Now, only one worker needs to stand in a safe area and click a button on a computer to control an intelligent rock drilling rig dozens of meters away, performing fully automated drilling operations.
