Moshi District Council has provided special training to Primary School Principals and teachers appointed to manage procurement in their schools, as part of efforts to strengthen resource management and comply with public procurement procedures. The training aimed to build the capacity of participants in various key areas including the Council's Asset Coding system, procedures for the formation of procurement committees, as well as proper procurement implementation methods and how to deal with challenges that arise in the process. Barega Fred, Procurement Officer and Training Coordinator, said the training aimed to enable teachers and School Principals to understand procurement procedures in practice to avoid errors that may affect the proper use of public funds. “It is important for procurement managers in schools to ensure that they follow all established procedures to avoid legal and operational challenges. This training will help build a solid foundation for asset management and procurement,” said Barega. Emmanuel Welano, Procurement Officer, said that many of the challenges that arise in procurement are due to a lack of understanding of procedures, which can be avoided through regular training. “We expect that after this training, participants will go on to effectively implement all that they have learned, especially in store management, accurate record keeping and following procedures for obtaining permits before entering into contracts,” said Welano. In ensuring effective management of school assets, the training also focused on providing participants with skills in how to best fill out and maintain store books to control the use and loss of materials. The training was provided by the Procurement Officers of the Moshi District Council, where it aims to increase transparency, accountability and efficiency in the management of primary school procurement and assets, a move expected to improve the delivery of educational services in the council.
