How to Overcome Fear of Abandonment

Some people who were never actually abandoned develop the fear of being abandoned themselves. However, just because someone has been abandoned at some point in life doesn't inevitably mean they will develop a fear of being abandoned themselves. So how does fear of abandonment work and what can we do to overcome it?
