It Was Too Late to Save This Helicopter | 17 Dead Aldo Sterone - Aviation On Thursday, March 12, 2009, a helicopter (Sikorsky S-92A - Cougar Helicopters) en route from St. John's to the Hibernia oil rig crashed into the sea. When it disappeared from radar, it was 55 km from Newfoundland. The crew had contacted the Gander ocean controller to announce that they were turning back for an emergency return to land. Of the 18 people on board (2 pilots and 16 passengers), 17 died as a result of the crash, including Captain Matthew Davis and Co-pilot Tim Lanouette; only one passenger, Robert Decker, managed to escape from the helicopter and resurface. He was recovered from the Atlantic Ocean 80 minutes later. The Achilles heel of helicopters is the MGB (or MGB), or Main Gearbox. It is located just below the main rotor and is responsible for transmitting the rotation of the engine(s) to: The main rotor The tail rotor The accessories (i.e., alternator or electric generator, pumps, etc.) The purpose of a helicopter gearbox or main transmission is to reduce the engine's output speed to the most appropriate level for driving the helicopter's main and tail rotors. For example, a helicopter with an engine speed of 6,000 rpm has a rotor that needs to spin at 300 rpm and a tail rotor that still needs to spin at a different speed. All components of this gearbox must be immersed in oil. Without oil, friction increases, temperatures skyrocket, and rotating parts are destroyed within minutes. According to industry standards, an MGB must be able to operate without oil for at least 30 minutes. The Sikorsky S-92A's MGB exploded within 10 minutes during certification testing. It failed the tests and was not certifiable in its current state. Nevertheless, following negotiations with the FAA, the manufacturer managed to get the MGB approved on the grounds that failures are very rare (an MTBF better than one failure every 10 million flight hours). In this video, we'll see how the airworthiness certification rules for airplanes and helicopters are open to discussion, negotiation, and far too flexible in order to allow aviation to evolve. It's important to know that in addition to regulating aviation, the FAA also has the role of promoting it. These two roles often come into conflict.
