EPIC END to our Skate trip, all in the name of Science | Sea fishing Scotland

The depths of the Firth of Lorn and surrounding waters on the west coast of Scotland are famous in angling circles for the giants that lurk there. Beasts of over 7 feet long and weighing well over 200lbs can be expected from depths of well over 500 feet. However, once hooked, it's getting them to the boat that can be the challenge. On our most recent trip out in search of these leviathans, onboard Laura Dawn II with skipper Leigh Taylor we are joined by a Marine Biologist from Nature.scot and a Vet from Edinburgh Napier University and the RZSS studying for a PhD in Skate conservation, as they continue to monitor the health of the Skate population and assess the success of the implementation of a marine protection order placed in this stunning part of the country, now designated as a Special (Scientific) Area of Conservation (SSAC). As is often the case in fishing, our guests for the day were kept waiting until the last minute before all hell broke loose on deck as darkness approached, leading to some chaotic, yet thoroughly enjoyable scenes.
