How Far Do You Hit Your 7-Iron? | Club Speed and Dynamic Loft Comparison
How far should you be able to hit a 7 iron at certain clubhead speeds? Every 1 mile per hour of club speed increases can equate to 2-3 Yards. That's up to 30 yards if you increase your club speed by 10 mph. Do you hit your 7-iron the optimal distance? Can you stop the ball on the green with the optimal landing angle? Is the ball flight high or low? Does the ball spin back or have topspin? If you don't have enough club speed the ball may not reach the optimal peak in height to provide optimal ball flight conditions to give you a good amount of distance while still maintaining spin, height and landing angle. If you have too much speed you may hit the ball too high to optimize the optimal peak in height and the dynamic loft or launch angle will need to be reduced. 7-irons are all built differently. Today 7-irons have lofts ranging from 26 degrees to 35 degrees. Club fitting into a certain iron category can help to optimize these numbers and this is why certain irons are stronger or weaker in loft. For this test Thomas Campbell, PGA Professional hits his Callaway Apex TCB 7-iron at varying club speeds and dynamic loft ranges. I test the performance and distance at 70 mph, 80mph and 90mph and dynamic loft ranges from 20 degrees to 35 degrees. By optimizing club speed and dynamic loft you can pick up some serious yardage and get into an optimal flight trajectory and then use club fitting to fine tune the numbers.
