Nine and a half months later, the death toll from this operation, still ongoing, is at least 40,000 "officially" dead in #Gaza, the vast majority of them civilians, and in reality at least three to four times that number, with hundreds of thousands injured and more than a million displaced. To justify this mass crime to public opinion, the ruling classes and mainstream media in Western countries are resorting to a very specific manipulation of history, according to a strategy that is primarily that of the State of Israel itself. The idea is to present the Palestinian attack as an extension of the persecution suffered for centuries by European Jews, from the Middle Ages to the climax reached with the genocide of 1941-1945. Enzo Traverso, historian of European political modernity and Judaism, has just written a short book about this manipulation, "Gaza Before History" (already published in Italian and Spanish, to be published in French in October). With Julien Théry, he examines how, by presenting the October 7 attack as a "pogrom," the facts are falsified by equating them with the violence perpetrated in the past against Jewish minorities by Christian majorities. The goal is to deny the reality of a situation of resistance (whatever one thinks of the forms this resistance has taken) to a brutal military occupation accompanied by disastrous humanitarian conditions imposed on an entire population since 2007. It is also to make people forget that the State of Israel refused to negotiate with the Gaza authorities and violently repressed, through the assassination of demonstrators, a peaceful movement such as the "March of Return" in 2018-2019. More broadly, the absurd assimilation of Palestinian armed resistance to the antisemitic atrocities of Europeans of the past aims to mask colonial domination and the liberating logic of the violence of the colonized theorized by Franz Fanon in "The Wretched of the Earth." On the other hand, in France in particular, the accusation of antisemitism is crudely exploited to attempt to discredit the left on the grounds of its support for the Palestinians and its opposition to the genocide. Historically anti-Semitic, the far right has undergone a spectacular reversal in recent years, as it identifies with the project of ethnic and cultural homogeneity implemented by the Israeli government, which is its counterpart in France (and we observe the same logic among other European far right movements). This Zionist philosophy obviously remains highly paradoxical (and temporary, as long as the main adversary remains the Muslim population), since it goes hand in hand with a logic of national purity involving, for example, the prohibition of dual nationality.
