They have all been accused of anti-Semitism—a base use as a means of radically discrediting a political opponent by attributing solidarity with the appalling crimes committed by Europeans against the Jews, particularly with the Judeocide of 1941–1945. But how is such a widespread use of this accusation possible today, when anti-Semitism, the real kind, has historically been the work of the right? In this new episode of OSAP (On s'autorise à penser), Julien Théry welcomes Maxime Benatouil, an activist with the French Jewish Union for Peace and the Tsedek! collective, who is one of the nine authors of a collection of texts entitled Contre l'antisémitisme et ses instrumentalisations (Against Anti-Semitism and Its Instrumentalizations), recently published by La Fabrique. The book brings together contributions from Judith Butler, Frédéric Lordon, François Vergès, Houria Bouteldja, and Naomi Klein. Maxime Benatouil revisits the profound contradictions and toxic game of "left-wing Zionism," which contributes to the falsification of Israeli propaganda by portraying the October 7 massacre as an anti-Jewish attack, a pogrom, and undermines support for Palestinians in the face of the war of extermination launched against them. While presenting themselves as progressive and anti-racist, "left-wing" Zionists deny the colonial nature of the State of Israel, the dispossession and massacres of yesterday and today on which its existence is based, and the racist discrimination between "nationalities," that is, apartheid, which characterizes its legal structure. The attempt to equate anti-Zionism with anti-Semitism, taken up by Emmanuel Macron, is profoundly fraudulent and perverse. It falsifies history, since the majority of Jews were hostile or indifferent to Zionism before the European Judeocide perpetrated by the Nazis (and many anti-Semites were and still are Zionists, starting with Lord Balfour, the author of the declaration creating a Jewish national home in Palestine in 1917, or many French fascists like Lucien Rebatet). It also distorts present reality, since the hostility to colonization and apartheid characteristic of the ethno-religious state of Israel does not imply any hostility to Jews... and many of the latter remain anti-Zionist despite the reactionary wave of recent decades. Perhaps the worst part is that the official thesis equating anti-Zionism with anti-Semitism is a powerful factor in the development of anti-Semitism—a real one, that is—since it lends credence to the State of Israel's claim that its actions are carried out in the name of all Jews. Mr. Benatouil also returns to the unique case of Germany, addressed in the book with a text by Leandros Fischer. The German state stands out for the ardor of its support for the State of Israel and outright prohibits support for the Palestinians, which in Germany is a crime of opinion. A large proportion of Israeli weapons are, moreover, supplied by Germany. Guilt for the Nazi genocide thus leads to support for another extermination.
