In The War of the Worlds after organised human resistance collapses, the Martians dominate the ruined countryside while the few surviving people hide in fear and desperation. Cities stand abandoned, roads fall silent, and normal life disappears beneath the shadow of the invasion. Humanity seems close to extinction as the Earth appears no longer under mankind’s control. (Verse 1) The guns had all fallen silent where the final lines had stood, And over ruined England moved the shadow none withstood. The cities lay abandoned beneath the smoke and haze, While Martian engines wandered through the remnants of past days. (Verse 2) The scattered souls remaining kept to darkness and conceal, With whispered words and careful steps and hunger sharp and real. No voice of law remained to calm, no order held the land, Only the distant movement of the rulers now at hand. (Chorus) Beneath the Martians’ shadow all the world had changed its face, And mankind crept in silence through the ruins of its place. No certainty remained to those who watched the heavens grim, For Earth no longer seemed to truly still belong to them. (Verse 3) The roads grew still and empty where the countless crowds had fled, And every home stood hollow like a chamber of the dead. The fields once bright with labour lay untended, strange, and bare, While fear itself seemed settled in the heavy poisoned air. (Verse 4) The few who still endured it moved with caution through the gloom, As though the earth itself had turned into a waiting tomb. Each distant cry or echo carried terror through the night, For no man knew what horror might emerge before first light. (Chorus) Beneath the Martians’ shadow all the world had changed its face, And mankind crept in silence through the ruins of its place.
