Historical Costume Books Part 1 (featuring a minor tangent into the Ditchley Portrait).

How do you research historical costumes? Which books are useful, and which ones aren't? Today I thought I'd take you through some of the books I have that deal with fashion history. I can't go through all of the books I'd like to share with you in one go, so these are all broad overviews of Western Fashion (or elements of it), both academic and more accessible, to give you an idea of what to expect from these books. Let me know if this is of any use, and I'll see about doing some similar videos on other sets of books that might be of interest! https://www.vam.ac.uk/collections?typ... https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collect... - Books dealt with are: Costume and Fashion in Colour, 1760-1920, Jack Cassin Scott, (Poole, Blandford Press: 1976) The Chronicle of Western Costume, John Peacock, (London, Thames and Hudson: 1991) Fashion Details: A Historical Sourcebook, Consultant Editor Melissa Leventon, (Ivy Press: 2016) English Costume From the Second Century B.C. to 1972, Doreen Yarwood, (Batsford Press: 1972) A History of Fashion: A Visual Survey of Costume from Ancient Times to the Present Day, Douglas Gorsline, (Batsford Press: 1953) Costume in Detail: 1730-1920, Nancy Bradfield (Dobby Publishing: 2005) {Borrowed with thanks from Lucy Sturge} The Golden Thread: How Fashion Changed History, Kassia St Clair, (John Murray Publishers: 2018) Back in Fashion: Western Fashion from the Middle Ages to the Present, Giorgio Riello, (Yale University Press: 2020) The Corset: A Cultural History, Valerie Steele, (Yale University Press: 2003) {Borrowed with thanks from Sarah Thursfield} Fashion History from the 18th to the 20th Century, The Collection of the Kyoto Costume Institute, (Taschen: 2019) Historical Fashion in Detail: The 17th and 18th Centuries, Avril Hart and Susan North, (V&A Publications, 2005) {Borrowed with thanks from Lucy Sturge} Nineteenth Century Fashion in Detail, Lucy Johnston, (V&A Publications, 2006) {Borrowed with thanks from Lucy Sturge} Fashion: The Ultimate Book of Costume and Style, Snr Ed.
