From Shadows to Scissors: German Expressionism's Revolution and the Tim Burton Style (History Day)
This National History Day documentary traces how the visual style of German Expressionism, including shadows, distortion, and exaggerated design, shaped early psychological horror films. These stylistic choices later influenced the Universal Monster films of the 1930s, as well as filmmakers like Tim Burton, whose work continues this expressionist tradition through gothic imagery and outsider characters. While many audiences recognize Burton’s unique style, they often don’t realize its roots trace back to early cinema and horror history. Coen Cowley’s documentary won First Place in the Youth Division at the Hawaii State National History Day competition.
