Should I use a water sealing finish on my wood planter and are there food-safe options?
Another question that we get quite a bit from our customers is whether they should add a finish to their planter to protect it from the elements and extend its life. This video provides an answer to these questions and shows the differences between a couple of great food-safe options: Tung Oil Extract and Shellac. Most of our customers leave their planters unfinished and get great results. Our planters are designed to last many years and will do so even without a water-resistant coating. But they will fade to gray over time like all cedar products so if you want to keep them looking fresh-out-of-the-box a little longer, we do recommend applying a finish. We coated two planters to show you the color differences and water-repelling characteristics. We are going to follow up over time to show you how these planters age compared to an unfinished planter.
