Northern Central #17: Spirit of the Union

In early November of 2021, Dynamo Productions hosted a photo charter on the Northern Central Railway in southern Pennsylvania. The event featured some rare mileage, traveling from the railroad's home base in New Freedom, PA as far north as the Howard Tunnel, the third oldest railroad tunnel in the country. At the head of the train was 4-4-0 American "William H. Simpson" #17, which was built by the Kloke Locomotive Works in 2013 for the NCRR in its first year of tourist operations under the name "Steam Into History". While #17 may be a replica, she captures the look and feel of a classic 4-4-0 perfectly with her balloon-style smokestack, outthursting cow catcher, shiny brass, wooden cab and colorful paint scheme. The line passes through the charming countryside of York County, passing through quaint farmlands, past historic structures and small communities, and over several creeks and streams, making for a perfect setting for a photo charter. In addition to the rare mileage, a Civil War theme added to the charter's excitement, with period actors adding a late-1800s atmosphere to the scenes, including a trio of Union soldiers. It was nearly 158 years ago to the date when President Lincoln traveled across these very rails en route to Gettysburg where he would give his famous Address. A famous photograph shows Lincoln and several other dignitaries posed at the historic depot at Hanover Junction, where he would give a speech before continuing on to his final destination. The day was a great deal of fun and Dynamo Productions did a first class job at hosting their first charter at the Northern Central, which most certainly will not be their last! Enjoy!
