A New Hope for Restoring Sight
Why can we transplant hearts, lungs, and kidneys—but not eyes? ARPA-H’s THEA (Transplantation of Human Eye Allografts) program, led by Dr. Cal Roberts, builds on exciting advancements in vision research from Dr. Dong Feng Chen’s lab, including a biomaterial implant designed to stimulate optic nerve regeneration. This breakthrough could help make whole eye transplantation and vision restoration possible, while also opening the door to broader nerve repair applications for stroke and spinal cord injuries.
