Quem é Mãe Hilda Jitolu? – Ocupação Ilê Aiyê (2018)

Arany Santana recalls the "slow, soft, and subtle" authority of Mother Hilda Jitolu. Vivaldo Benvindo, Antonio Carlos dos Santos Vovô, and Hildelice dos Santos, the ialorixá's children, speak about the importance of Mother Hilda's support in the creation of Ilê Aiyê. Luiza dos Santos, the oldest resident of Curuzu, speaks of the people who were supported and welcomed at the terreiro. Iana Marucha, singer of Ilê Aiyê, sings a song in honor of Mother Hilda. As a cry of resistance against the historical abuses that oppress the freedom and majesty that inhabits each person—in this case, Black people—the 42nd Occupation pays homage to the trajectory of Ilê Aiyê. Testimonies recorded in July 2018, in Salvador, Bahia. Learn more about the exhibition: https://bit.ly/2RjYpVF.
