This documentary tells the story of the Mission Reach of the San Antonio River, an eight-mile section south of downtown that was deliberately stripped of every natural feature after catastrophic floods in the early twentieth century. Engineered to move water as fast as possible, the channel succeeded at flood control but erased habitat, access, and life from the river for decades. We will learn how local residents, scientists, and planners challenged the assumption that concrete was the only solution. After a twenty-year effort and a public vote approved by more than seventy percent of residents, the city committed nearly four hundred million dollars to undoing the damage. Engineers reintroduced natural curves, pools, and riffles while maintaining flood protection, restoring over three hundred acres of riparian land and more than one hundred acres of aquatic habitat. The results surprised almost everyone. Since restoration, biologists have documented one hundred ninety-six bird species, twenty-seven species of fish, and the successful reproduction of the Guadalupe bass, the state fish of Texas.
