Throwing rocks into a dying estuary seemed completely senseless, but it was the first step in triggering one of the most surprising ecological recoveries in American history. The Chesapeake Bay was once home to oyster reefs so massive they were actually navigational hazards. At their peak, these oysters could filter the bay's entire 19-trillion-gallon volume in just a week. But after a century of relentless dredging and devastating diseases, the population crashed to less than 2% of its historic level. The reefs were scraped down to bare mud, the underwater grasses died off, and the bay's natural lungs were gone. To save it, scientists proposed a radical and controversial solution: build a new foundation out of solid stone, then plant 2 billion seeded oysters on top of it.
