Of the approximately 12-15 million chronic pain patients, approximately 8 to 10 million Germans suffer from chronic back pain. Back pain is the symptom, not the cause. This symptom can be described and classified in many different ways. Acute back pain lasts a maximum of 6 weeks and then completely subsides. Subacute back pain lasts at least 6 weeks but completely subsides after 12 weeks at the latest. Chronic back pain lasts longer than 12 weeks. The distinction between acute and chronic back pain is essential and fundamental, as the two types are completely different. Furthermore, a distinction must also be made between nonspecific back pain (80%) and specific back pain (20%). Typical types of specific back pain include herniated discs, osteoarthritis of the vertebral joints, spinal stenosis, and others.
