The Coolest Zhiguli of the USSR's Half-Life - the VAZ-2107 When creating the VAZ-2107 "seven," the goal was to maintain as much commonality as possible with the VAZ-2105 "five" body, while still creating a new model. Overall, this was arguably successful. The new hood, combined with the "cool" radiator grille, gave the plain "five" a certain charm to its exterior. Initially, glued-on moldings appeared on the sides. The rear was slightly distinguished by new taillights. The reason for changing the trunk lid, however, remains a mystery: the designers abandoned the previous stamping, making it virtually flat while maintaining the same mounting dimensions. However, at first glance, this was completely unnoticeable. The main external difference between the 2107 and the 2105 is, of course, the radiator grille, designed to mimic a Mercedes. It was for this reason that the acronym HBM—"I want to be a Mercedes"—was attached to the "seven." The 2107's gleaming bumpers initially horrified everyone: what was that? After the "wooden" 2105, for the first time, some kind of flimsy plastic appeared, which jiggled when pressed with a finger. However, this was a step towards new safety requirements: the plastic had to support the body during an impact at speeds of up to 4 km/h. The "Mercedes-style" grille led to complaints from some VAZ-2107 owners about increased fuel consumption: together with the "hump" on the hood, it somewhat spoiled the car's aerodynamics. However, there is no official data on this matter: no comparisons of fuel consumption between cars with identical equipment have been conducted. Unable to completely overhaul the car's exterior, the designers made amends on the inside: for the time, everything looked decent. The new semi-rigid steering wheel immediately became a scarce component. The interior, seats, instrument cluster, and heating and ventilation systems have been completely redesigned. The floor now features a pile carpet. Some cars now feature a hydraulic headlight beam adjuster.
