DIY Dulcimer build (video 1) Dulcimer sides
This video documents (in gory detail) the build of a mountain dulcimer. This is the first in the series of videos that describes building the sides and internal structure of the dulcimer. This dulcimer is unique in several ways. The fretboard is not glued to the soundboard as is common with most dulcimers. Instead the soundboard is free to vibrate along its full length and width. This allows greater frequency response and volume. The sides are also taller than standard to increase volume. There is a beam running the full length of the instrument for structural integrity. There bridge is not glued to the soundboard. This allows the adjustment of intonation, which in turn allows you to install any diameter strings. This dulcimer can be converted from tradition to bass, or baritone. Intonation can then be adjusted. The instrument has both microphone and piezo electric pickups, along with the pre-amp. This is an instrument of my own design, not a kit.
