Autoconhecimento: qual dos seus eus está decidindo por você?

You decide one thing and do another. It's not weakness. It's because you still don't know how many "selves" are making decisions for you. In this video, I talk about one of the most frustrating patterns in mental life: the conflict between what you decide and what you do. On Sunday night, one "self" decides to go on a diet. On Monday morning, another "self" takes over and completely ignores that decision. This isn't a lack of discipline. It's a much deeper confusion about what you call "self." We use the word "self" for everything: for the thoughts that pass through the mind, for the emotions that come and go, for the behaviors that change according to context. But if you can renounce an emotion, you cannot be that emotion. If a sad thought disappears and you continue, you weren't that thought. So what is the real "self"? I propose here a distinction that changes the way you relate to your own mind: there is the "self" that thinks, the "self" that acts, the "self" that feels, and there is the "self" that observes all of this without being confused by anything. This deeper self is never absent. It's the only one to which the word "I" should, in fact, be reserved. When you understand this, the momentary little selves lose the power to hijack your life. You stop defending positions that aren't yours. You stop suffering the consequences of decisions made by a self that no longer exists.
