F-106: der Überschallabfangjäger, der keinen Piloten braucht
An American supersonic interceptor lands without a pilot in a snowy field in Montana. The engine is still running. The radar is transmitting. And no one can explain how it was possible. The F-106 Delta Dart was America's answer to the Soviet atomic bomb. Built to intercept enemy bombers before they reached their targets. Equipped with one of the most powerful engines of its time, connected to a ground control system capable of coordinating the air defenses of an entire continent. Faster than anything the Soviet Union could launch. And yet, it wasn't the enemy that pushed this machine to its limits, but a routine training flight over Montana in February 1970. In this video, we tell the complete story of the F-106 Delta Dart: from the initial design flaws of its predecessor to the revolutionary engineering solutions that made it the fastest production aircraft of its era, to the moment that went down in aviation history. Why did the pilot eject from a still-flying aircraft? How could a jet remain stable and land without any human intervention? And what became of the aircraft afterward? History of the Air presents meticulously researched, fact-based stories about aviation that not only inform but also captivate. Each episode is based on historical sources and illuminates the technical, human, and strategic context behind the most famous and obscure moments in aviation history.
