Does an Upgraded Exhaust Manifold Actually Make More Power on a Cummins?
Does an upgraded exhaust manifold actually make more power on a diesel truck? Today we put that question to the test on the dyno. In this video, we strap down a 2002 Dodge Ram 24 valve Cummins making right around 450 horsepower and run it back to back with a bone stock VP44 exhaust manifold versus a three piece upgraded manifold. Same truck, same turbo, same injectors, same tuning. Nothing changes except the manifold. The goal is simple. Real data with no guessing. This VP44 Cummins is running all the common bolt ons most diesel owners have. Intake, five inch exhaust, upgraded intake horn, seven by ten injectors, tuning, and a 6265 turbo. On the stock manifold, it lays down 461 horsepower and over 1090 pound feet of torque, which makes it a perfect test candidate. From there, we swap manifolds and dig into horsepower, torque, spool up, boost response, and EGT changes. We break down why the factory 24 valve manifold is one of the worst flowing Cummins designs, how and why they crack and warp over time, and what role exhaust flow actually plays in turbo efficiency. You will see dyno graphs comparing runs, towing simulations, auto tune data, and real world differences you would actually feel behind the wheel. The results are exactly what most diesel owners want honest answers on. Do not expect massive peak horsepower gains, but you will see faster spool, improved torque in the midrange, slightly lower EGTs, and better overall drivability. We also talk through whether an upgraded manifold is worth the money, when it makes sense to upgrade, and when your budget is better spent on injectors or a turbo.
