In the city of Trieste, in northwestern Italy, a beach stands out for maintaining a centuries-old tradition: men and women are separated by a concrete wall three meters high and 74 meters long that extends into the sea. Known as "La Lanterna" or "El Pedocin," the public beach is managed by the city hall and allows children to stay on either side. Access costs €1.20, about R$7, and is through separate entrances for men and women. Regular visitors say the division guarantees privacy, tranquility, and preserves a tradition that began in 1903, when the region was still controlled by the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Not everyone approves of the model. Tourists from the Netherlands and Scotland said they gave up on visiting because they didn't want to separate their families during the outing. Locals, however, defend the wall's permanence, stating that visitors are aware of the rules beforehand and decide whether or not they wish to enter. Over the years, there have been several requests to demolish the wall, but all have been rejected.
