He 'escapes' with the words, "Gird up your loins and put on your sandals." Jesus liberates us from being bound by spiritual chains. He opens all the 'prison doors' that hinder our journey with Him. The Lord is the one who opens doors, pulls us out, and guides the way. Paul, having met the Lord, is liberated from the compulsion to be strong. Through the Cross, he encounters the 'grace of weakness' and becomes strong when he is weak. Paul does not remain merely in 'inner comfort,' as some spiritualities do today. An encounter with the Lord inevitably shifts from 'comfort' to a burning passion for 'evangelization.' Peter and Paul were very different people. Their lives, professions, educations, personalities, and even the places where they proclaimed the Gospel were different. However, they live in 'unity and harmony' within the 'Holy Spirit.' Although they honestly argued, clashed, and even opposed each other, they never parted ways. They find new paths for evangelization within concrete real-life events and encounters. They do not merely repeat old methods of pastoral administration, or become trapped in habits and formalities of doing things only as they have always been done. They listen and discern within specific situations, accepting the challenges of reality. They discern whether our faith maintains dynamism and vitality, and whether our relationship with the Lord becomes a witness, a hope, and a love in our daily lives. Who is 'Jesus' to you? What place does 'Jesus' occupy in your life? Are we a community of disciples that testifies to the 'joy and comfort of the Gospel' in every situation? Pope Leo XIV spoke of the three conditions of love yesterday. Let us not be people who keep their lives to themselves, refuse to give them away, and seek only consolation and comfort. Let us encounter love and become love through losing, giving, and hospitality. Let us pray that the Blessed Mother will help us to encounter and learn love every day.
