10 of the BEST Full Sun Plants for Hot Gardens

Full sun gardening in the heat is no joke — especially here in coastal North Carolina. Right now, we’re dealing with severe drought conditions, high temperatures, and very little rainfall, and my full sun garden beds are definitely feeling the pressure. In this video, I’m sharing 10 of the best full sun plants for hot gardens based on what is actually holding up in my own garden. These are the plants that are still performing, blooming, adding color, or at least standing strong when the weather is less than friendly. I garden in North Carolina, Zone 8B, where summer can bring intense sun, humidity, heat, dry spells, and plenty of garden surprises. Some plants can handle those conditions beautifully, while others start to struggle fast. I’ll share the full list in the video, along with real-life examples from my garden, why these plants work for me, and how they’re handling the heat. A few favorites like Dipladenia and Vinca have been especially reliable for bright, vibrant color in full sun. They’re usually treated as annuals here, but they bring so much impact to hot garden spaces and continue to look beautiful even when conditions get tough. I’ll also briefly talk about a few plants that have not performed as well for me in these hot, dry conditions — including calibrachoa and petunias — and why they may not always be the easiest choice for full sun gardens in our climate. If you’re looking for heat-tolerant plants, drought-tough flowers, full sun garden ideas, summer annuals, or plants that can handle hot North Carolina gardens, I hope this video gives you some helpful ideas and real-life garden inspiration.
