NUTHALL: Broxtowe Parish #4 of 10
BROXTOWE PARISH #4: NUTHALL Welcome to Nuthall everyone. This a big, suburban village located just off the M1 at Junction 26 near Nottingham. It borders Kimberley to the West, Watnall to the North and the Cinderhill and Basford areas of Nottingham to the East. Nuthall can be split into two areas. Firstly there’s Old Nuthall, which lies between Kimberley and the Nuthall Island roundabout on the A610. That’s what today’s main walk will focus on. Then there’s New Nuthall, which lies between Nuthall Island and Bells Lane. That includes two suburban housing estates, and is where the vast amount of Nuthall’s population live. This one doesn’t have a massive amount of landmarks but it does have lots of history. For a start, no video about Nuthall would be complete without mentioning Nuthall Temple, the large Italianate style mansion which was once the home of the Holden. It was demolished in 1966 to make way for the motorway but part of it survives next to the Three Ponds Pub. Nuthall was also where Captain Ronald Shepherd lived. He was a test pilot for Rolls Royce and made the first free flight of the Thrust Measuring Rig or TMR, which went by the nickname of the Flying Bedstead. He’s buried in New Farm Lane Cemetery. Nuthall is also heavily associated with Anne Ayscough, the martyr who was burned at the stake. And here we’ll also learn about a man named Basil Russell.
