Mnquma Municipality turning the corner

Mnquma Municipality in the Eastern Cape was once in deep financial and administrative crisis, with poor service delivery, rising debt, and repeated audit findings from the Auditor-General. At one point, the municipality owed over R5-million to creditors, and more than R500 million in irregular, fruitless and wasteful expenditure had to be written off as part of its financial recovery process. But over the past few years, officials say the municipality has turned the corner, achieving clean audits for two consecutive financial years, including the 2024/2025 audit cycle.
