Two years to the day after the death of Nahel, killed by a police shooting during a traffic stop, families, friends, and activists gathered to pay tribute to him. A commemoration filled with emotion, but also anger and a desire for justice. Nahel was 17 years old. On June 27, 2023, he was shot at point-blank range by a police officer in Nanterre. A scene filmed and widely broadcast, it sparked a wave of urban riots and rekindled debates on police violence and racial discrimination in France. This Friday, Nahel's mother, his friends, and many people committed to fighting racism and state violence were present to pay tribute to him. After several speeches, a wreath was laid at the exact spot where the young man lost his life. A minute of silence was observed, followed by a friendly barbecue. Lydia Menez and Andrei Manivit were on hand to collect testimonies. Among them was that of Nourdine, an anti-racism activist who has been active since the 1980s, who deplores the worsening police violence and the persistent stigmatization of working-class neighborhoods: "What happened to Nahel is not an isolated case; it is a symptom of a system that continues to criminalize young people from the suburbs." On the judicial front, a turning point occurred in early June: the investigating judges ruled out the possibility of self-defense and decided to refer the police officer accused to the criminal court for murder. A trial will therefore be held in the coming months.
