A rally paid tribute to him on June 27th, attended by the mayor of Nanterre, who announced a commemorative plaque. This initiative was immediately attacked by the usual reactionary voices, quick to criminalize the victims rather than question police responsibility. At the time, the official version relayed by the media claimed that Nahel had driven into an officer. Two videos quickly dispelled this story: the car was not threatening anyone, and a police officer even shouted "you're going to get shot in the head" before firing at point-blank range. Since then, the police narrative has adapted: it's replaced by insults against the "multiple offender." The problem? Nahel had never been convicted. But that doesn't change anything for those who refuse to face reality: an unarmed teenager was killed in cold blood. The police officer, on the other hand, is free, reinstated, and still paid. Worse still: his legal costs were covered by the state, his union supporters defended him like a hero, and his transfer to the Basque Country looks more like a reward than a punishment. The IGPN, for its part, is floundering between inertia, compromise, and worrying connections with the far right. Nahel has become a symbol of a system at its wit's end.
