Shimazu vs. Otomo: All-Out Confrontation From the Invasion of Chikuzen to the Battle of Hetsugigawa During the latter half of the Sengoku period, Kyushu was engulfed in a three-way battle between the Otomo, Ryuzoji, and Shimazu. In 1585 (Tensho 13), Toyotomi Hideyoshi, wary of the Shimazu's growing power, attempted to negotiate a peace agreement between the Shimazu and Otomo clans, but the conflict continued due to differences in their views. In June 1586 (Tensho 14), Shimazu launched an invasion of Chikuzen but failed. In October of the same year, he abandoned the invasion of Chikuzen and began an invasion of Bungo from the Hyuga and Higo approaches. Shimazu Yoshihiro's Higo-guchi invasion force was hampered by resistance from Shiga Chikatsugu and others, and failed to join forces with Shimazu Iehisa's Hyuga-guchi invasion force. Reluctantly, the Hyuga-guchi invasion force moved independently to take control of the city. On December 12, they defeated the combined Otomo and Toyotomi forces at the Hetsugi River. The next day, they entered Funai and captured it.
