The map said there was no road. A moment later, a stranger led us to a place hidden in the Cambodian wilderness. We set out to find a quiet spot by the water we'd visited a few years earlier. There was only one problem—neither of us remembered exactly where it was. So we veered off the regular road and began making our way through Khmer villages, sand, potholes, cliffs, and paths that at times looked as if they ended exactly where the water began. The navigation system increasingly suggested there was no road there. We didn't find the first spot. Instead, we found ourselves by the green water, near the temples of Angkor, on wooden bridges, and at a local swimming pool full of children and two-zloty ice creams. The real adventure began, however, when a stranger approached us and invited us to a place hidden in the middle of nowhere. Ewa immediately suspected that Alan was about to have his organs removed. Alan, being Alan, calmly followed him on. At the end, we found a beautiful house by the water, silence, butterflies, geese, and a man who had lived there for 30 years. He also told us that Angelina Jolie had once been photographed on a boat there. We don't know how much truth there is to this story, but the place itself truly made a huge impression on us. After leaving, of course, we lost our way again. Fortunately, all the organs remained in place, and we ended the day with one of the best Khmer meals we've had in Cambodia so far.
