■A crucial theme for Japan's future: "Coexistence with Foreigners" According to a survey by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, approximately 69,000 students in public schools require Japanese language instruction. This is an increase of about 20% from two years ago. Of these, about 10% receive no special Japanese language instruction at school. Even more serious is their subsequent career paths. The dropout rate for high school students requiring Japanese language instruction is about seven times higher than the overall rate, and the rate of non-regular employment is about twelve times higher. The support they didn't receive as children is impacting their future. This time, we interviewed a teacher who is in charge of "removal classes" teaching Japanese to children with foreign roots in public schools.
