Homemade Tool Post Grinder - part 8 (bearing preload assembly)

The next natural project for me is to make a tool post grinder to use on my Colchester Student lathe. I also have the need for a cutter grinder and so the thought occurred that perhaps I could design a tool post spindle and drive which could also be part of a cutter grinder. If I had sufficient space in my workshop I probably would have looked for a Clarkson Cutter Grinder to refurbish and focussed instead on making just the tool post grinder. Taking all things into account, designing my own combination machine seemed to be a reasonable proposition. In part 8, I complete the spring box which ensures consistent pre-load on the bearings. After a final test I determine that the preload will be 12.5lbf or 55N. 00:00 Introduction to the content of this video 00:24 Recap on bearing preload 01:03 Centre drilling spring seating holes on PCD 04:15 Drilling spring seating holes 06:07 Producing flat bottom holes to correct depth 07:21 Testing spring-rate 08:26 One small mistake in the outer ring and modified drawing 09:11 Turning inner ring 11:15 Cutting groove for circlip 13:05 Parting to length 14:03 Showing how spring box fits in body 14:44 Machining counterbore in inner ring 15:54 Drilling spring seating holes in inner ring 16:14 Re-testing spring-rate 19:36 Updated bearing preload rate 20:40 Benefit of having spring box as a sub-assembly 21:01 Next video content - the small pully See also: Part 1 - Making the body of the clamp:    • Homemade Tool Post Grinder - part 1 (spind...   Part 2 - Making the 'yoke' which clamps in the tool post:    • Homemade Tool Post Grinder - part 2 (compl...   Part 3 - Spindle body:    • Homemade Tool Post Grinder - part 3 (spind...   Part 4 - End caps:    • Homemade Tool Post Grinder - part 4 (end c...   Part 5 - Deep hole drilling of spindle:    • Homemade Tool Post Grinder - part 5 (deep ...   Part 6 - Centre turning the high speed spindle:    • Homemade Tool Post Grinder - part 6 (centr...   Part 7 - Completing the spindle:    • Homemade Tool Post Grinder - part 7 (compl...   Music from You Tube Studio: 'The Girl from Saint-Anne-des-Plaines' by The Mini Vandals.
