Winter in Norwegen - Glücklich durch die dunkle Jahreszeit | Nordseereport | NDR Doku
Life north of the Arctic Circle is extreme, especially during the Arctic winter with its months of darkness, meters of snow, and sub-zero temperatures. To cope with these conditions, the people of the Norwegian city of Tromsø have developed a unique rhythm. Everyone has their own tricks for defying the cold: ice swimming for well-being, winter soccer under the Northern Lights, and sled dog races with a guaranteed adrenaline rush. And afterwards: hot coffee and North Norwegian specialties. This is how people here make life "koselig." It means something like coziness and is the Norwegian equivalent of the Danish concept of hygge. You can find this and other documentaries in the ARD Mediathek: https://www.ardmediathek.de/dokus Tromsø is Norway's northernmost metropolis, 350 kilometers above the Arctic Circle. The city is known as the "Paris of the North" or the "Gateway to the Arctic." 70,000 people live here at the 69th parallel, including 15,000 students at the world's northernmost university. The northernmost professional football club also plays on the Tromsø Fjord. In winter, the players train under artificial light at minus five degrees Celsius, preparing for their last home game before the Christmas break. This season, they are among the top teams in the Norwegian First Division. Their secret to success: their Nordic-by-nature training. Ben Voigt also trains every day during the winter. The German, an exchange student, fell in love with the landscape, nature, and wintertime. He lives on his farm with his wife and child and more than 40 sled dogs, training with his huskies for a unique sled dog event: the Finnmarksløpet, 1,200 kilometers long and thus the longest race in Europe. But cold can also be invigorating, as people like Birgit Lockertsen know very well. Every Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m. sharp, she meets her ice-bathing group at the seaside and plunges into the one-degree Celsius water. The bathing ritual is celebrated in typical Tromsø style. And afterwards, of course, there's coffee and cake. The "North Sea Report Special" documents the lives of people in a region and at a time of year when the magical Northern Lights or the appearance of whales are part of everyday life.
