Up here, nature sets the pace, and the people respond with craftsmanship, community, humor, and a touch of craziness, right down to the twelve-and-a-half-meter-long pirate ship in the front yard. The surf spot Unstad welcomes us with an icy eleven degrees Celsius water temperature. After a dry run on the beach, we dive into the cold water. "Svolværgeita," a sculptural peak that looks like something out of a fantasy film, towers above the town of Svolvær. The steps up are sweaty, but not too complicated. A quiet canoe expedition begins in Raftsund. We set up camp for the night in front of the Trollfjord and collect trash on hidden beaches. We also visit an old cod liver oil factory, which has since been converted into a cultural meeting place. Young people from all over the region meet there for concerts, workshops, and parties. Cultural figures from all over the world now also come. In the midnight sun, we make a promise to ourselves: We want to come back.
