Trou de la Tine Mont Salève near Geneva Haute Savoie France Special Place
Trou de la Tine Mont Salève near Geneva Haute-Savoie France Special Place: https://www.google.com/maps/place/Tro... It is an imposing, natural rock arch and a deep collapse crater in the mountain’s limestone. • The view: When you look up into the opening from below, you gaze through a huge hole directly up at the blue sky and the treetops at the top of the cliff. • Rock climbing: The rock hole is extremely popular among mountaineers. Professional guides offer spectacular free-hanging rappelling experiences through the eye of the rock. Location on the hiking route The Trou de la Tine is ideally situated on the classic loop trail: 1. First, you ascend through the shady Grotte d’Orjobet. 2. Shortly after exiting the cave, you’ll reach the Trou de la Tine. 3. Immediately afterward, the trail leads to the exposed rock ledge of the Vire de la Corraterie, offering a view of Geneva. Geological Features • A tectonic window: The Trou de la Tine is a combination of a prehistoric sinkhole (doline) and a rock ledge exposed by erosion. • Microclimate: Inside the rock hole and at its shaded base, the cool temperatures persist for an extremely long time. Even in the height of summer, temperatures inside are often noticeably lower than on the open plateau. On-Site Navigation • Route: The trail passes directly by the base of this massive rock hole. If you hike up the classic Sentier d’Orjobet, you’ll automatically reach a fork in the trail after passing the cave’s exit. • Caution at the upper edge: If you hike the route in reverse and approach from above (from the Plateau Les Crêts), the hole is difficult to see from above and is accessible only via a narrow trail. Extreme caution is advised here at the unsecured edge! Combination Tip: The “Three Highlights Loop” The best way to experience the Trou de la Tine is the classic Orjobet-Corraterie loop. This hike can be completed perfectly in half a day: 1. Start: Le Coin hiking parking lot (Collonges-sous-Salève). 2. Ascent: Through the Grotte d’Orjobet (approx. 45–60 minutes of strenuous climbing on rocky terrain). 3. First break: Right at/inside the Trou de la Tine for spectacular photos looking up. 4. High-altitude highlight: Crossing the Vire de la Corraterie—a narrow path carved into the vertical rock face with a breathtaking view down toward Geneva. 5. Descent: Back to the parking lot via the Sentier de la Croisette or the Sentier du Coin. Equipment & Safety • Footwear: Due to the moisture around the cave systems and the rock hole, hiking boots with a deep tread (Vibram sole) are essential. Running shoes or sneakers will slip immediately on the smooth, polished limestone. • Children & Dogs: The section near the Trou de la Tine—and especially the subsequent Vire de la Corraterie—is not recommended for dogs or small children, as the drop-offs are completely unsecured.
