The hike from the Le Coin hiking parking lot up to the Grotte d’Orjobet is the classic and most direct route to the cave. It is a challenging, steep mountain trail. The trail is steep, rocky, and requires sure-footedness Directions: Step by Step 1. The Forest Section (Sentier d’Orjobet) From the Le Coin parking lot, follow the yellow trail markers toward “Grotte d’Orjobet.” The trail immediately enters the shady forest and winds its way up the flank of Mont Salève in a series of tight switchbacks. The terrain consists of forest floor, roots, and increasingly loose rocks. 2. Below the Rock Faces After about 30 to 40 minutes, the forest thins out in places and the trail leads closer to the imposing, vertical limestone cliffs of the Salève. Here, the path becomes narrower, rockier, and noticeably steeper. At some of the switchbacks, the first sweeping views of the Geneva Basin come into view. 3. The Final Ascent and Staircase Shortly before the cave, you reach the base of the rock face. The trail now leads over stone steps, some of which are carved directly into the rock or secured with wooden crossbeams. A wire rope handrail provides additional support on the steepest sections. Finally, you stand before the imposing, dark entrance to the Grotte d’Orjobet. Crossing the Cave The actual ascent does not end at the cave entrance but continues right through the center of the mountain: • You enter the cool, damp cave. • The path leads steeply upward over the historic stone steps built by the SAC in 1905. • Sufficient daylight streams in through natural rock windows, so you won’t need a headlamp. • After a few minutes of steep climbing, you’ll exit the cave at the upper exit and shortly thereafter find yourself on the high plateau near the Trou de la Tine. Important Practical Tips for the Ascent • Risk of slipping in wet conditions: Since the upper part of the trail runs over bare limestone, it becomes extremely slippery during or shortly after rain (“soap effect”). Only attempt the ascent in dry conditions. • Footwear: Sturdy hiking boots with a grippy tread (e.g., Vibram) are absolutely essential for this slippery terrain. • Sun protection in summer: Although the first part of the trail is in the forest, heat builds up significantly on the southwest slopes of the Salève in summer. An early morning ascent is advisable on hot days.
