It contains about thirty tumuli, which are burial mounds, the tombs of kings and nobles from the Silla period. The larger the tumulus, the higher the person's rank in society at the time. The most famous tomb is that of King Cheonmachong. It was discovered in 1973 and yielded incredible treasures, including jewelry and his gold crown. The first tomb to visit is Geumgwanchong (Geumgwanchongleung), which also houses the museum. It's located on [street name missing]. Bonghwang-ro (entrance: 3000 won / €1.80) It's interesting to see the inside of a burial mound. There's also a second building with a cinema featuring a screen in front, one on each side, and one on the ground—it's great! You'll find the first burial mounds at the museum exit (Bonghwangdae), but the main area is a little further on (Gyeongju Historic Areas / Daereungwon Ancient Tomb Complex). There are a few more, with a proper path, a small pond, and groves (entrance is free). At the end of this park, you'll exit again onto a parking lot and tourist shops. A little further on, you'll find another area with a very old stone astronomical observatory (Cheomseongdae) that was built around the 7th century, during the Silla kings. Not far from there, there's a grove called Gyeongju Gyerim is quite pleasant. On your way out, you can head towards Donggung Palace. I didn't go because it seemed rather sterile, just a building and a lake lacking charm, but perhaps I'm wrong. In any case, I stopped at the entrance gate. (Entrance costs 3000 won / €1.80) TIP: At the entrance to Gyochon Village, they give out maps, including one of the historical walking routes. One of the most photogenic spots is called Daereungwon Photo Zone. The Historical Site Be aware that the burial mounds are not all grouped together. You have to cross parking lots, roads crowded with cars, and shopping areas to reach the other historical sites, such as the observatory or the various palaces.
