Southeast Asia and Australia in a fragmenting world

Southeast Asian states have been reeling from a protracted political and economic crisis following US military strikes on Iran and a blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. Regional leaders have criticised the Trump administration’s unilateral and revisionist tendencies and have been forced to seek alternate sources for fuel and fertiliser imports to mitigate surging prices. Australia has found common cause with Southeast Asia as it looks to secure alternate energy providers and enhance its own supply chain resilience. The Lowy Institute hosted three international experts to examine how the region is managing these global challenges and explore opportunities for deeper cooperation between Southeast Asia and Australia.
