The mass is festively scored like a Missa solemnis with brass and timpani in addition to four solists, strings and organ. The chorus dominates, especially in the Gloria and the Credo. This mass is often called "Spatzenmesse" or "Sparrow Mass" because of the violin figures in the Sanctus and Benedictus, which is thought to resemble the graceful sound of a sparrow chirping. Latin: Credo in unum Deum, Patrem omnipotentem, factorem coeli et terrae, visibilium omnium et invisibilium omnium. Et ex Patre natum ante omnia saecula, Deum de Deo, lumen de lumine, Deum verum de Deo vero, genitum, non factum, consubstatialem Patri, per quem omnia facta sunt, qui propter nos homines et propter nostram salutem descendit de coelis. English: I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of earth and heaven, of all things seen and unseen. Begotten of the Father before all worlds. God from Gods, Light from light, true God from true God. Begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, through Him all things were made. For us and for our salvation He came down from heaven. And was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the Virgin Mary. And was made man.
