This mass is often called "Spatzenmesse" or "Sparrow Mass" because of the violin figures in the Hosannas of the Sanctus and Benedictus, which are thought to resemble the sound of a bird chirping. Whether this chirping sound was intentional or not is open to debate. However, musical historians do agree that , later in his life, Mozart had a beloved pet bird that would actually sit on his shoulder while he would create his scores.
