Rare WWI Aerial Dogfight Footage (1916) | Colorized & Upscaled
Support the work: https://buymeacoffee.com/wardaddy1914 This footage originates from 'War As It Really Is' (1916), filmed and distributed by Donald C. Thompson, one of the earliest American war correspondents to document the First World War at close range. Thompson was known among his contemporaries for his composure under fire. One journalist described him as having “more chilled-steel nerve than any man I know,” a reputation earned through years spent filming on active fronts rather than from a distance. Shown here are French military aircraft operating from forward airfields in 1915–1916, including reconnaissance and fighter biplanes typical of the period. The footage also captures the wreckage of a German aircraft marked with Iron Cross insignia, sometimes referred to in period sources as a “Maltese Cross,” reflecting early-war terminology. At this stage of the conflict, aerial warfare was still experimental. Aircraft roles, markings, and combat doctrine were evolving in real time, often differing from unit to unit and field to field. This footage has been restored using modern digital techniques, including AI-assisted colorization and upscaling, and presented with reconstructed sound to help modern viewers better experience these early moments of air combat while preserving the character and limitations of the original film. Probable aircraft identification: The French aircraft appear consistent with Nieuport 17 fighters or closely related Nieuport variants in service during 1916. The German wreckage is consistent with early Albatros aircraft displaying Iron Cross markings typical of the period. Due to the transitional nature of early First World War aviation, exact model identification remains uncertain. #WorldWarI #WWIAviation #HistoricalFootage
