We continue our series of publications about Kazakhstani families whose members wield political influence or economic clout across a wide range of sectors and regions. Today, the focus is on the Manzorov family. The head of the family is 64-year-old Bagdat Manzorov, a former boxing coach who spent a long time in public service, served as deputy akim of the Almaty region under Amandyk Batalov, and now owns significant business assets. During his tenure, the official has repeatedly found himself at the center of high-profile scandals and criminal investigations, but these cases never reached trial. For example, in 2019, Bagdat Manzorov was arrested on suspicion of large-scale fraud using his official position. Various sources reported at the time that he was allegedly involved in land fraud in Almaty's Galamat microdistrict. However, the Prosecutor General's Office dismissed the case, declaring there was no "evidence of a criminal offense." A public conflict then erupted between the Prosecutor General's Office and Anticorruption over the legality of the investigation. In June 2022, it became known that a criminal case had been opened based on a complaint filed by a certain businessman, Ablikim Mametov, who accused Bagdat Manzorov of corporate raiding, extortion, and causing damages amounting to nearly $6 million. Manzorov himself called all the accusations slander, and judging by the lack of follow-up, the case also collapsed. In this review, we examined the assets of the former official himself and his immediate family, and discovered several markets and shopping centers, hotels, and large plots of land in Almaty and the Almaty region. In particular, Bagdat Sailanbayevich's daughter, Aigerim Manzorova, controls, among other things, the Kazyna market near the Almaty flea market, and his wife controls the Eurasia shopping center in the Samal microdistrict.
