Dear friends, today we have a very difficult and very human conversation. Many people know the name Anna Alexandrovna Vyrubova (Taneeva, 1884–1964). But almost everyone knows it in one form: "that very friend of the Tsarina," "the one who was close to Rasputin," "the one about whom the newspapers wrote such horrors that it's embarrassing to recount." But who was she really? In this video, calmly, without fuss or sensationalism, we will try to separate popular myths from what is confirmed by documents. We will explore her entire life—from a comfortable Moscow childhood and a serious illness at age 14, through her friendship with Empress Alexandra Feodorovna, an unsuccessful marriage, the terrible train accident of 1915, her arrest in the Peter and Paul Fortress, the humiliating medical examination of 1917 (the documents of which have survived), her escape across the frozen Gulf of Finland in the winter of 1920, and to her final, very quiet years in Helsinki. ⚠️ IMPORTANT ABOUT THE MATERIAL: This story is based on an analysis of a number of sources: the memoirs of A. A. Vyrubova herself, materials from the Extraordinary Investigative Commission of the Provisional Government in 1917 (including the report of investigator V. M. Rudnev), the correspondence of Empress Alexandra Feodorovna, the memoirs of her contemporaries, and the works of professional historians. Using these sources, we attempt to separate popular myths (like the "Vyrubova diary," long since recognized as a forgery) from documented facts. Some of the dialogues and everyday scenes in our story have been reconstructed—that is, their meaning has been restored—based on letters, memoirs, interrogation reports, and the works of historians. We do not claim to be verbatim versions of these conversations, but we strive to ensure they are authentic in spirit and consistent with known facts. We honestly discuss controversial episodes throughout the video.
